César Cui

César Antonovich Cui ((ロシア語:Це́зарь Анто́нович Кюи́); 13 March 1918)〔Назаров, А.ф. ''Цезарь Антонович Кюи'' (Moscow: Muzyka, 1989), p. 221.〕 was a Russian composer and music critic of French and Lithuanian descent.〔As Cui wrote to Felipe Pedrell in 1897: "Bien que russe, je suis d’origine mi-française, mi-lithuanienne." See Geoffrey Norris and Lyle Neff. "Cui, César." Grove Music Online. Oxford Music Online. Oxford University Press, accessed October 29, 2012, http://www.oxfordmusiconline.com/subscriber/article/grove/music/06938.〕 His profession was as an army officer (he rose to the rank of Engineer-General (compared to full general) of The Russian Imperial Army) and a teacher of fortifications, and his avocational life has particular significance in the history of music. In this sideline he is known as a member of The Five, a group of Russian composers under the leadership of Mily Balakirev dedicated to the production of a specifically Russian type of music.
